Safe lifting techniques are so important to talk about frequently because manual material handling creates a hazard for just about everybody. Whether lifting, pushing, or pulling is part of someone’s primary job function or if the printer has just run out of paper, it is important that workers are knowledgeable on safe lifting techniques to get the task completed safely
Back injuries are particularly detrimental as they can be difficult to treat, cause chronic pain, as well as become sensitive to repeat trauma. If you are at home completing some spring cleaning, or on the job getting it done, try these techniques to prevent a strained back:
- Feet should be shoulder-width apart and they should be positioned as close to the object as possible. Make sure you have a firm footing and can maintain steady balance.
- Squat next to the object, using your knees and hips. Avoid bending at the waist.
- Pull the load close to your body. This is very important!
- How you grab the object has a big impact on how easy it is to carry. Make sure you have a solid grip that is comfortable.
- Tighten your core to support your back.
- Rise and lift with your legs! Be steady, smooth.
- Point with your toe to change direction and avoid twisting at the waist.
With all of this being said, the most important thing to remember is that if you don’t have to lift it, don’t! If you don’t have to carry it, don’t! There are lots of tools out there to help us with our jobs. Use hand trucks, carts, dollies, forklifts, pallet jacks, hoists, scissor tables, etc. If you do need to handle it manually, ask for help. Having a helper reduces the weight in half. Lastly, let’s talk about stretching. When your body is cold or stiff, muscles are susceptible to strains and sprains. Before lifting, pushing, pulling, or completing really any physical task at all take the time to warm up. Some quick jumping jacks and toe touches can get enough circulation going to loosen the body up and get it ready to perform.
